"I wasn't aware" - Becky Lynch discusses the controversial finish to a major WrestleMania match
WWE Superstar Becky Lynch recently reflected on her match against Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35. The bout had a controversial finish as The Man pinned The Baddest Woman on the Planet even though her shoulders weren't fully down on the mat.
The bout took place in the main event of the show, and they all made history by becoming the first women to headline The Grandest Stage of Them All. Big Time Becks walked out of the event as the RAW and SmackDown Women's Champion. That was also the last match of Ronda Rousey's first run in WWE before she went on a lengthy hiatus.
During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Becky Lynch commented on the controversial finish by stating that she wasn't aware of what happened during the match, as she was in the moment. She added that she's not sure whether what Ronda Rousey did was intentional or not.
“I was in the moment. But I couldn’t see it. But the discourse afterwards, and also the sound of the audience made it seem like something had gone wrong. But obviously, at the time, I wasn’t aware. And yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know if that was intentional, or accidental. I could see the motivation for it being intentional, like, oh well, this will be my out to get a second match. You know what I mean? In the long game, or could have just been accidental," said Becky Lynch.
Becky Lynch says Ronda Rousey changed the original finish of the WrestleMania 35 match
Becky Lynch went on to state that she, Charlotte Flair, and WWE producer TJ Wilson were planning out the match and they decided that Ronda Rousey would look like she was about to tap out.
When the UFC Hall of Famer arrived and was informed of the plans, she changed the finish because she was afraid her mother wouldn't talk to her if she looked like she was going to tap out in the match.
“[TJ Wilson] was like, maybe you have Ronda in an armbar, she looks like she’s about to tap out. And so Ronda comes and we tell her the creative and say and then you’re almost about to tap out. [Ronda says] Oh no, my mom wouldn’t look me in the eye or talk to me again if I looked like I was about to tap out. All right, well, she’s probably not going to tap out on the finish. So you know, she never tapped out in her career. So I understood it, respected it and moved on quickly," said Becky Lynch.
Ronda Rousey left WWE last year. The former UFC Champion and Becky Lynch never got to face each other in a one-on-one match. It's unlikely that the match will ever happen in WWE.
