"I got very lucky. I never had to do a tryout" - 34-year-old SmackDown star on how he got into WWE
Current SmackDown Superstar Grayson Waller has reflected on his journey to WWE. He revealed that he never did a tryout and got extremely lucky.
The Aussie star has been a heel for his entire career in the Stamford-based company. He and Austin Theory are former tag team champions. He used to host a talk show named after himself, which featured interviews with other stars that often led to physical and verbal confrontations.
Grayson Waller recently appeared on the latest edition of Sheamus' YouTube series Celtic Warrior Workouts. When asked how he got into WWE, the 34-year-old star stated:
"Yeah, so I got very lucky. I never had to do a tryout. So basically, I was trying to work out how to get noticed internationally. So, what I did is I went on Survivor in Australia. I was trying to think of a way to get my name out there to be more than just an independent wrestler. And that kinda got me a little bit of hype. We had the WWE live events on, and they came to a show we had on the weekend," he said.
He added:
"We had a big Coliseum tournament, which is our yearly tournament in Sydney. That’s probably, pretty much the biggest that we have. I won the tournament and then went to the live event on the weekend, and it worked out perfectly... I remember when I met the scouts at the event, I was who I was at all times. So I think that kinda, got me over the line." [1:08 - 2:00]
Grayson Waller's last singles match in WWE was in August
It's been a while since The 21st Century Success Story had a singles match. He mainly teams up with Austin Theory in tag team matches. The two stars don't wrestle every week though, as they are sometimes involved in backstage segments during SmackDown.
Grayson Waller's last singles match occurred on the August 16 episode of WWE SmackDown. He collided with Kevin Owens, and the bout was won by the former Universal Champion. If Waller and Theory break up and go their separate ways, it'll be interesting to see what the Aussie star accomplishes on his own.
