"I love the idea of Gunther getting upset" - WWE analyst breaks down 30-match streak finally broken at Crown Jewel
Gunther looked incredible during his main event match against Cody Rhodes at WWE Crown Jewel 2024. The World Heavyweight Champion lost a hard-fought battle to The American Nightmare, eventually losing his opportunity to become the inaugural Crown Jewel Champion.
His loss at the premium live event marked a 30-match streak getting broken for the World Heavyweight Champion. The Ring General had not lost a one-on-one match via pinfall since his loss to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL before Crown Jewel. Gunther did lose to Jey Uso in a dark match on SmackDown in May, but the match ended via disqualification. Crown Jewel marked the star's first pinfall loss in a singles match since The Grandest Stage of Them All.
WWE analyst Sam Roberts, in a recent edition of the NotSam Wrestling podcast, addressed the 37-year-old's loss and stated that the loss was necessary. The former WWE personality stated that The Ring General winning all his matches would make his character and his matches less compelling and exciting.
“What I would almost love to see happen is this vibe where maybe on Monday Night RAW, people are like, ‘Oh, we saw you lose to Cody. We know you're beatable, now we can beat you.’ Because there is that too, right? That if Gunther becomes too unbeatable, if it just is assumed he will always beat everybody, the matches become less compelling eventually," said the analyst. (11:50 onwards)
Further, Sam also added that his loss would help him unleash a more aggressive side of his character, building his gimmick for the future.
"So if we are at this point where every now and then, someone's going to be able to get one over on Gunther. As fans, it becomes more compelling. Also, I love the idea of Gunther getting upset because people on the roster go, ‘No, I've seen you get beat, and I can beat you,’ and Gunther uses that frustration of being beat and takes it out now. He's got a more aggressive side on all of his opponents,” added Sam Roberts. (12:11 onwards)
Who is Gunther's next challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship?
The Ring General, after his loss at Crown Jewel, might be looking for a new face as his challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship. The upcoming episode of WWE RAW features a Fatal Four-Way Match to determine the champion's next opponent.
Given the show was already taped in Saudi Arabia, the results from the tapings show that Damian Priest ended up winning the match and had a face-to-face confrontation with the champion following his victory. With some intriguing developments in the world title picture, fans will have to wait and see what happens when The Ring General and The Archer of Infamy collide next.
