"If the call comes, I am always ready" - 39-year-old star on not having received an offer from WWE or AEW yet
A top name has opened up about his recent comments regarding not getting an offer from WWE or AEW. The star who made the comments is former Intercontinental Champion Matt Cardona, fka Zack Ryder.
Matt Cardona was let go by WWE in 2020. He has lit the independent wrestling scene on fire over the past four years and is hands down the most popular star in the indies, calling himself The Indy God.
Cardona recently commented on not having received offers from either WWE's Triple H or AEW's Tony Khan. In a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, he expanded on his comments and had the following to say:
"I can't harp on what is not going on, I have to focus and put all my focus on just me and creating my own path and creating my own legacy and I feel like I've done that the past four years, but it's almost another year, it's almost 2025. So the pressure is on to top myself and it's a good pressure, I love the pressure, but listen, I am always ready, the phone rings right now, I'll have a conversation but I can't just be waiting by the phone. (...) I wanna do my own thing, be my own boss, have a lot of fun, make a lot of money. If the call comes, I am always ready." [1:07 - 1:52]
Matt Cardona's rise in WWE
Back in 2011, Matt Cardona's YouTube series Z! True Long Island Story went viral and was receiving millions of views on a regular basis. Suddenly, he became a massive crowd favorite and fans were chanting his name on every show, every single week.
Cardona's popularity eventually led to a US Title run and a storyline with John Cena and Kane. Unfortunately, the company didn't capitalize on his popularity. Cardona did get a WrestleMania moment, though, when he won the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 32 in 2016.
