"It was my cop-out" - John Cena reveals heartbreaking reason for major WWE look ahead of the Retirement Tour
John Cena will be having a retirement tour in 2025 after announcing his plans to the WWE Universe at Money in the Bank. Cena also recently revealed why he wore dog tags for the majority of his career.
The 16-time WWE World Champion started wearing dog tags early in his career as part of his "Marine" gimmick. He consistently had it over the years, usually kissing it before matches before handing it down to the ringside crew.
In an interview on WIRED, Cena was asked about the reason why he wore dog tags. He revealed that his parents' names, Joseph and Carol, as well as his brothers' names, Dan, Matt, Steve, and Sean, were on the dog tags.
"My dog tags used to say the names of my parents, and my brothers. And it was my cop-out way of saying like, 'Hey, you guys are with me.' But I wasn't really, this is gonna get deep. I wasn’t really good at being a son and being a brother. So, rather than wear this thing that they could see on TV, what I began to do for them was show up. So I'm trying to be better at showing up and not using a talisman to be like, 'See, I'm there.' So I ditched the dog tags for more one-on-one time," Cena said. [From 6:32 - 7:01]
John Cena grew up with his family in West Newbury, Massachusetts. He began his wrestling career in 1999 and was signed by WWE in 2001. He went on to become one of the greatest superstars in pro wrestling history.
WWE's Chief Content Officer gives an update on John Cena's farewell tour
John Cena is expected to be back in WWE soon. According to WWE's Chief Content Officer, Triple H, Cena will begin preparing for his farewell tour, which should start in January and last until his final match late in 2025.
"He's going to come back soon. I don't remember exactly what we said or what he said. John has earned the right in his career to do whatever he wants, when he wants and I'm happy to be there for him. I believe it is the beginning of the year, John will come back. And it's sort of like the farewell tour that has an end to it, and John is going to come back and just have a blast like he always does," Triple H said at the SummerSlam post-show press conference.
John Cena is expected to be at premium live events such as the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania 41, and more.
