"It was a gift" - CM Punk details first call with Nick Khan ahead of WWE return
CM Punk made a controversial WWE exit in 2014 and criticized the company several times, rejecting the idea of a comeback. The Second City Saint then made his AEW debut, making it clear that he had no plans to return to his former stomping ground.
In September 2023, CM Punk was shockingly fired from AEW after a backstage altercation with Jack Perry. With his controversial past and unfavorable WWE exit in 2014, not many expected him to re-sign with the global juggernaut. However, The Best in the World surprised fans last November by appearing at Survivor Series: WarGames.
In a recent appearance on No-Contest Wrestling, Punk revealed how he thought about retiring after being fired by AEW. The former world champion also disclosed that Nick Khan called him to discuss a WWE return.
"Nick Khan calls me in November and he's like, 'When are you free and clear?' And I was like, 'Nick. I don't know if you heard, I was fired.' [He'd] heard it through the grapevine that I might be free. 'How do you not know that?' He's like, 'I don't know, I know.' He goes, 'Certainly, you're not telling me that there's not an...', and then he just stopped himself and he went, 'Okay. Yeah, we want to talk to you about coming back,'" said Punk.
The Best in the World said Survivor Series: WarGames in Chicago turned out to be a gift for his return to the company. Punk further added that his lawyer and the global juggernaut's management sorted out the legal details just within 48 hours to make the thunderous comeback possible.
"Then it was a gift. Survivor Series is in Chicago. It's just in three days. 'Yeah, come on. You gotta make your way.'" he added. [33:27 onwards]
CM Punk is set for a Hell in a Cell Match at Bad Blood
The intriguing rivalry between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre seems to be on its last lap. Both men have been trying to take each other down for months and a Hell in a Cell Match is now expected to end it all.
WWE Bad Blood 2024 will feature McIntyre and Punk locking horns for the third time. With both men promising to make each other bleed, fans' excitement is at an all-time high. It would be interesting to see how things play out in Atlanta.
