"Jealousy" - 7-time WWE champion claims people backstage did not like popular gimmick

Gimmicks play a crucial role in a WWE Superstar's career as they can elevate one to another level on the roster. Recently, Drew McIntyre opened up about his popular gimmick and stated people backstage did not like it.

In 2009, Drew McIntyre was called 'The Chosen One' after he was introduced on television. The gimmick had its fair share of success as he won the Intercontinental Championship and was often featured in high-profile matches on the brand for a while.

Unfortunately, the gimmick wasn't a hit behind the scenes. In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, the former WWE World, Intercontinental, NXT, and Tag Team Champion, he talked about his previous gimmick and stated that people backstage weren't fans of it. Moreover, he said people did question his rise with the gimmick.

"I guess in certain ways. But a lot of people did not like it backstage, so I didn't feel as much backstage with the professional jealousy that I didn't realize how significant it was and the things that were being said then it was all out of jealousy. Why is this kid getting this huge opportunity when I've been here for all these years? But for the opportunities on TV, I certainly did for a period," McIntyre said.

He added:

"And looking back, I know obviously I could have done things a little bit differently, but at the same time, I just didn't have those tools in my wheelhouse to do things differently. And we all go through our journeys for a reason to end up at the final destination," McIntyre said. (H/T CVV)

Drew McIntyre is feuding with CM Punk on WWE RAW

Earlier this year, Drew McIntyre's reign ended abruptly after he provoked CM Punk at WrestleMania XL. The interaction and the beatdown allowed Damian Priest to cash in the Money in the Bank contract.

Later, The Second City Saint cost The Scottish Warrior on different occasions and kept him away from the World Heavyweight Championship. The two went head-to-head at The Biggest Party of the Summer, where McIntyre won.

However, it wasn't over as Punk challenged him to a rematch and won a Strap match against The Scottish Warrior at WWE Bash in Berlin. Unfortunately, Drew McIntyre crossed a line or two on Monday Night RAW.

On WWE RAW, McIntyre broke CM Punk's bracelet and tried to shove it down Punk's throat after he blindsided him. The Second City Saint had to be stretchered out and it'll be interesting to see what happens next between the two.
