Jey Uso winning over WWE fans; wrestling veteran discusses what the star could do better
Main Event Jey Uso is currently one of the biggest babyfaces in WWE. The 38-year-old star kicked off his singles run after splitting from The Bloodline last year and has gradually become a major player for the RAW brand.
Uso was one of the hot favorites to win the 2024 King of the Ring tournament. After defeating Finn Balor in the first round, he also took down Ilja Dragunov in the quarterfinals. However, he came up short against eventual winner Gunther in the semifinals of the tournament.
In a recent clip from Jim Cornette's Drive-Thru, the veteran claimed he was happy to see Jey Uso rise through the ranks in WWE. He said the star's entrance was a spectacle, with fans joining in on the act. Cornette felt Jey could become a blockbuster talent with more exposure, and his King of the Ring encounter against Gunther showed that he was capable of putting on great matches.
"The fans did the lights and the waves, and it is a great visual and the people love him. I'm not mad the people love Jey Uso. I just wish he would tighten up some of the things he's doing so that they would continue to love him. But in this match, he tried extra hard, and Gunther, I think, brings out the best in everybody." Jey Uso recently spoke about his current gimmick
During a recent interview with the Battleground Podcast, Jey Uso disclosed how an old Bret Hart commercial inspired his current on-screen character.
"There was an old commercial with Bret Hart. Do you remember it? That commercial came on and he had the pink glasses. I'm automatically 'Light bulb.' Like I need blue ones. I need the exact same ones but blue. Remember, it had the rubber strap on here and it was like very flimsy? I wanted that whole look. I wanted that. We couldn't get it but kind of took it a little bit to make it mine. But I stole the whole idea from Bret Hart," he said.
Uso has enjoyed an organic rise to the top of the WWE roster. It will be interesting to see what lies ahead for the former Bloodline member on RAW.
