John Cena facing a WWE star he is very close to backstage could happen in 2025, says veteran (Exclusive)
The pro wrestling world is getting ready for John Cena's retirement tour, and former WWE star Afa Anoa'i Jr. believes the Cenation Leader could have a high-profile showdown with Cody Rhodes next year. As announced, John Cena will be back on WWE television in 2025 and will wrestle throughout the year before competing in his swan song.
The former WWE Champion will appear on multiple dates, and fans expect him to mix it up with some of the best talents on the WWE roster. During the latest episode of Enter The Bloodline, Afa Jr. explained why he could foresee John Cena taking on Cody Rhodes when he returns.
The American Nightmare has often been compared to Cena, as he currently fills the babyface champion role that the Hollywood star held for a long time in the WWE.
Afa Jr. noted that Cena and Rhodes maintain a close relationship behind the scenes, and it could translate to one of the biggest matches WWE could offer. The Samoan, imagined the company to flesh out a potential storyline between Cody and Cena, as he explained below.
"I'd have to say maybe Cody. I know that they are pretty close backstage. I know that they would have a really good run, whether it would be one match or it would build, because I think you've got to stretch these things out. You don't want to hotshot such a huge match," said Afa, fka Manu.[From 3:09 onwards]
Afa Jr. would also love to see John Cena wrestle a young WWE star
WWE will undoubtedly milk John Cena's retirement tour, ensuring he has matches against the top prospects across brands. Like many pundits, Afa Jr. would prefer if Cena gave the rub to an up-and-coming talent. The Anoa'i family member named Bron Breakker as a possible opponent for John Cena.
The reigning Intercontinental Champion would benefit tremendously from working with Cena, according to Afa.
"I feel like someone new like Bron Breakker would be good for Cena. I feel like a lot could be accomplished with Breaker working with someone like [Cena]." [From 3:31 - 3:40]
Most WWE Superstars would want a piece of Cena as the 16-time world champion prepares for his final year as an active wrestler, and considering Bron Breakker's momentum, he could be high up the list for a match against the 47-year-old legend.
