WWE News: John Cena makes history at No Mercy despite losing

Cenation is running wild!

John Cena was in his first World Championship match this past Sunday for the first time since Summerslam 2015, where he was unsuccessful against Seth Rollins. His last main event was at Survivor Series 2014 where his team defeated The Authority.

It is surprising that Cena has been out of the main event picture for so long, but that is perhaps due to his willingness to step away from the long-term main event picture in favour of younger and newer talent getting the spotlight. However, he is still a leader, and the face of the company, no matter what anyone says.

He’s been in the main event picture for over 9 years, and as of yesterday, WWE posted on their social media platforms that Cena made history by officially cementing the record of having the most main events by any superstar in WWE history.

He overtook The Undertaker and Triple H, who are both tied at 67 main events each. Here is the list of the top 5. This is including Royal Rumble match appearances as well.

2The Undertaker67
 Triple H 67
3Shawn Michaels48
4Randy Orton43
5Stone Cold Steve Austin41

Cena has surpassed the greatest of legends on the list. That is the power of his longevity. Out of all the four faces of the company(Hogan, Austin, Rock and Cena), none have been in the spot Cena has for longer.

Although the No Mercy title match came on at first, WWE is still considering it the main event of the show, and that will be what the record books show.  WWE posted the following video:

In reality, it was Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt that closed No Mercy. The reason that the Triple Threat match took place at the beginning of the show was because No Mercy was going head-to-head with the Presidential debate.

The Intercontinental Title match was supposed to go on last, but due to an NFL game, they decided to have The Viper vs The Eater Of Worlds go on last. The finish of that match saw Luke Harper return to distract Randy Orton, allowing Bray Wyatt to pick up the victory against Orton.

Even if Cena vs Undertaker main events Wrestlemania next year, Cena will now officially be on top of the list, and it looks like Cena will be on top of the list for a long time to come.
