John Cena could potentially face Gunther, says 5-time WWE World Champion, during his retirement tour

WWE Superstar John Cena's retirement tour is a few months away, and many have already given their two cents on who he should face in his final run. Recently, CM Punk commented on a potential Cena vs. Gunther match.

Earlier this year, The Cenation Leader announced his retirement tour, which will seemingly begin when WWE RAW moves to Netflix in January 2025. Many old and new faces have already expressed their desire to face the veteran, but he hasn't responded to them yet.

In an interview with The Hot Tag on 103.5 FM, CM Punk gave his thoughts on Cena's retirement tour. Besides volunteering to face and team up with the veteran, the five-time WWE World Champion speculated that John Cena could face Gunther in his final year as an in-ring competitor.

"Oh gosh! I haven't asked John [Cena], and I think everybody's going to have their two cents of what they would do. But what I love about John coming out and saying [he would retire], I really like that because I think he gets to kind of write his love letter to pro wrestling on his way out. So, I've always said this he announced he is gonna retire if he wants to get in the ring with me, whether it's tag or whatever, I'd be flattered," Punk said.

Punk further predicted that Cena might pass the torch to a young performer on his way out:

"Knowing John, I'm assuming it's going to be somebody new, someone he can hand the baton to. So, it might be Gunther or it might be somebody that he has his eyes on and nobody else is really seeing, you know. You don't know, and that's what excites me about." (From 08:52 to 10:12)

CM Punk on why he wants a final match with John Cena in WWE

Between 2011 and 2012, CM Punk and John Cena engaged in a heated rivalry, which arguably changed the trajectory of the Stamford-based promotion. The two had multiple encounters during their feud, but fans still want to see them lock horns one more time.

At the 2024 WWE Money in the Bank Post Show in Canada, Punk highlighted why he wanted to have a final showdown with The Cenation Leader. The Second City Saint was looking forward to Cena's retirement tour and wanted to be part of it in some capacity.

"Cena to my career means a lot. I don't think there's [sic] many people up in that rare air where if you talk about my career, I feel like you have to talk about John. It makes me feel proud that I think, if you talk about John's career, you have to talk about me. We're married in that respect. Proud of him, he gets to go out on his terms. I know that's important. I'm looking forward to what he does and I told him that if it's gonna be one more time, we gotta do it one more time."

It'll be interesting to see whether Punk gets to share the ring with Cena next year. Next month, he will battle Drew McIntyre at WWE Bad Blood.
