Kevin Owens' former partner Ricky reveals how he ended up on WWE SmackDown
Kevin Owens had a big match scheduled for last week's WWE SmackDown. His former partner made a major revelation about how he got to almost team up with the former Universal Champion.
Ricky Gibson had the biggest moment of his career after Owens failed to find a partner to face Austin Theory and Grayson Waller in a tag team match on SmackDown. The Prizefighter noted that he even asked WWE legend Rob Van Dam to be his partner after his original partner, Randy Orton, could not reach the show's venue due to travel issues.
In the end, Kevin Owens asked Ricky Gibson to become his partner for the show. The Oregon native spoke about how his WWE SmackDown appearance came to fruition on a recent episode of the Busted Open Radio podcast.
"Gabe Sapolsky reached out to me a couple of weeks ago and said, 'Hey, SmackDown/RAW are going to be in Seattle and Portland. It would be great if you could make it up to Seattle for extra work.' And I just show up and, you know, like everyone does. You put on the suit, you go to catering, and you hope for the best. The difference is I was walking around the hallways, and there's Kevin Owens walking around," Ricky Gibson said. [H/T WrestlingINC]
Ricky added that he had no clue about his role on the show. However, he jumped at the opportunity to become Kevin Owens' tag team partner for the night:
"He's literally walking around like he has no clue what he's going to be doing. So I just went, 'Hey, what can I do for you, man? Can I help you?' And it's just perfect, because I'm a tag team guy. I've been wrestling tag team [matches] for years... So when he was like, 'I need a tag team partner,' it was easy for me to just step up and go, 'Dude, I'm your guy.'" [H/T WrestlingINC]
Ricky’s WWE appearance will be one of the highlights of his career. He could even sign with the Stamford-based promotion in the coming years to become a top superstar down the line.
Kevin Owens' original partner arrived just in time on WWE SmackDown
Kevin Owens was not afraid of facing A-Town Down Under with Ricky by his side on WWE SmackDown. However, he hit Ricky with a Stunner after learning that his original partner had made it to the show just in time.
Randy Orton returned to team up with The Prizefighter for the big match on the blue brand. The two worked great together and hit their respective finishers on their opponents before The Viper picked up the win for his team.
The partnership between Kevin Owens and Randy Orton is turning out to be an entertaining one in the Stamford-based company. It would not be surprising to see them challenge The Bloodline for the WWE Tag Team Championship soon.
