WWE News: Kofi Kingston to undergo ankle surgery, to be out for a couple of months

WWE Superstar Kofi Kingston

What’s the story?

The WWE has announced that former WWE Tag-Team champion Kofi Kingston will miss several weeks of in-ring competition due to a right ankle injury sustained in a post-match beatdown by the Revival on Monday Night Raw.

In case you didn’t know...

As the WWE Universe witnessed on the Raw after WrestleMania, the Revival debuted and defeated the New Day in their debut match on the main roster. After the bout, Dash and Dawson attacked Kingston, leaving him helpless on the mat grabbing his right ankle.

Fans believed it to be of no concern and this tweet from Big E a few days later nearly confirmed that it was a work. Historically, the New Day have used social media to troll fans and bend the rules.

It seemed like Big E was joking about the injury, but it has now been announced by the WWE that the injury to Kofi Kingston is indeed real. He could be out for 2-3 months if the rehab is taken into account.

The heart of the matter

Just hours before the April 10 edition of WWE Raw, WWE.com posted a breaking news update on Kingston’s situation following the attack of the Revival. The text of the update is as follows, attributed to  WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann:

“During the attack by The Revival, Kofi injured his right ankle and heard a crack, and was unable to put weight on his leg following the attack.

Further evaluation and an MRI revealed that the attack had caused fragments of bone to break off the ankle bone (talus), requiring arthroscopic surgery to remove the bone chips from the damaged joint.”

Dash Wilder commented on the injury:

It is quite possible that the injury angle will be played into the on-air storyline, Dash’s tweet is an indication of the same.

What’s next?

Even if this isn’t a real injury and the WWE wants to use this as a way to make the Revival look stronger, an arthroscopic surgery to the ankle would take at least month to recover.

That doesn’t include rehab, which would probably take at least one month for Kofi to get his full strength back.

Xavier Woods will, in all likelihood, probably take his place and continue to feud with the Revival. With the Superstar Shake-up taking place, that provides the WWE with an interesting opportunity to really make an impact with the possible move of the New Day.

Author’s take

I personally believe the injury is real and Kingston will miss two months of TV time and in-ring competition. If it’s not, then it’s definitely being used as a way to make the Revival dangerous.

Now, the writers should have Dash and Dawson do the same to the remaining members of the New Day. Then, have SmackDown LIVE receive the longest-reigning Tag-Team champions in the Superstar Shake-up.

It wouldn’t hurt the New Day and it would only do wonders for a new team like the Revival.
