LA Knight's referee stunt leads to another "screwjob finish;" Bill Apter discusses the implications (Exclusive)
Sportskeeda senior editor and wrestling journalist Bill Apter spoke about LA Knight calling the shots during a singles match on SmackDown. The United States Champion was the Special Guest Referee for match seven between Andrade and Carmelo Hayes.
The seventh encounter between Andrade and Carmelo ended in a no-contest after Knight threw out the match. The United States Champion flew off the handle after a Superkick from Carmelo aimed at Andrade hit him instead. He hit a pair of BFTs to both participants, leading to the match being called off.
This week after SmackDown, Bill Apter pointed out that he knew something would go wrong when he saw Knight refereeing the match. He claimed it was always the case whenever any wrestler took charge of officiating duties for a match.
"I just left a comment about LA Knight officiating. Not just LA Knight but any wrestler. Any wrestler officiating a match as a referee, there's always going to be something going awry, some screwjob finish. They never ever end fairly," the veteran said.
The veteran journalist also spoke from the fans' perspective. He felt the audience expected a twist whenever a wrestler officiated a matchup.
"Plus, the fans expect it. They know something is gonna go wrong, and they're waiting to see what's gonna go wrong. So it's always kind of in the fans' mind that this is gonna be interesting because the referee is gonna get involved somehow," Apter mentioned.
Later, Nick Aldis reprimanded Knight backstage. He claimed the Megastar would have to defend the United States Championship at Crown Jewel against Andrade and Carmelo Hayes in a Triple Threat match.
