Lex Luger on whether Bret Hart is "bitter" over Bill Goldberg incident (Exclusive)
Lex Luger was a WCW wrestler when Bret Hart suffered a career-ending injury against Bill Goldberg at Starrcade in 1999. Almost 25 years on, Luger offered his take on the continued back-and-forth words between the former on-screen rivals.
The controversy centers around a moment during the match when Goldberg caught Hart in the head with a mistimed kick. The Hitman suffered a concussion and retired from in-ring competition several months later as a result of the injury.
In an exclusive interview, Luger told Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter what he thinks about people labeling Hart "bitter" all these years later:
"I don't know all the details. I don't know if Bret's bitter. I love Bret, we've always gotten on great. We had some great matches together, great memories. The Royal Rumble, who touched first? So I love Bret. I don't know the particulars of what's going on between him and Bill." [From 04:42 – 05:00]
As Luger referenced, he and Hart both won the 1994 WWE Royal Rumble after their feet touched the ringside floor at the same time. Watch the video above to hear The Total Package reflect on other moments from his career.
Lex Luger on Bill Goldberg's role in the Starrcade 1999 incident
Many of Bret Hart's most scathing remarks about Bill Goldberg came in a 2020 interview on Steve Austin's Broken Skull Sessions show. The wrestling legend labeled his former tag team partner "unprofessional" and questioned his WWE Hall of Fame credentials.
Lex Luger has no problem with Goldberg and does not think the two-time Universal Champion deliberately hurt Hart:
"I mean, personally, I know Bill really well as well. I was in the ring with Bill a lot and obviously Bill, if he did [hurt Bret Hart] I think he said it was the kick, obviously it's not something Bill did intentionally. We know the risks when we go in the ring. It was all very unfortunate, for sure." [From 05:06 – 05:31]
Earlier in the interview, Luger provided interesting details about the off-screen role he currently has with WWE.
