Major character change teased in heated Damian Priest-Gunther segment on RAW
Damian Priest and Gunther had an extremely heated, personal segment on Monday Night RAW ahead of their World Heavyweight Title clash. A major character change was teased.
"El Campeon" has been having an impressive run since WrestleMania 40 - surpassing the expectations for him to be a "transitional Champion." He has proven to be anything like that. Gunther, meanwhile, has been taking step-by-step moves to the top. After losing the Intercontinental Championship, he went on to pursue the King of the Ring, and he's now in the running to become World Heavyweight Champion.
In their first back-and-forth promo, Gunther insulted Damian Priest's "street credibility" and rough upbringing - essentially stating that being on the street was a choice. Gunther then boasted about his privileged upbringing.
The Ring General also slammed Priest's title reign as being "nothing" on RAW and that there's been no prestige. He told him to spare the embarrassment and just hand him the title. It was clear that The Archer of Infamy was positioned as the good guy/babyface in this rivalry.
El Campeon hit back with his words and said that if Gunther was only there to collect a paycheck, then he wasn't needed. While Gunther called Priest "Street Trash," the Champion essentially responded by telling him that after SummerSlam, the Ring General will have to fight from the bottom for the first time in his life.
While it didn't feel like anything was personal, this feud is now personal. After beating Braun Strowman tonight, Damian Priest took out Gunther.
