Major WWE star could dethrone Gunther and face Cody Rhodes in title unification match, says legendĀ
A WWE Hall of Famer believes Gunther could lose his World Heavyweight Championship to a top superstar. The latter could then challenge Cody Rhodes to a title unification match.
The superstar in question is none other than Randy Orton. The Viper surprisingly confronted The Ring General last Monday on RAW to challenge him to a World Heavyweight Championship match at Bash in Berlin. Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes will put his Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against Kevin Owens at the premium live event. The American Nightmare gave The Prizefighter the title shot in appreciation for his help against The Bloodline.
Since Randy Orton also helped Rhodes in his feud with Solo Sikoa's faction, WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry pointed out that he could ask The American Nightmare for a similar opportunity to the one given to Owens. However, he claimed it could happen after The Viper dethrones Gunther. Hence, he could square off against Rhodes in a title unification match:
"[Mark, do you see a scenario where Randy Orton tells Cody, like, 'Hey man, I was out there too. I had your back too. Where's my title shot?'] Where is my title shot? Denise, you're on point. But you know what, what if Randy beats Gunther and then says what you just said and he wants to unify and become a Universal Champion?" [31:29 - 31:53]
Ex-WWE employee thinks Cody Rhodes and Gunther could also have a title unification match
On the Behind The Turnbuckle podcast, former WWE employee Tommy Carlucci also addressed the possibility of having a champion versus champion title unification match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther.
Carlucci, who spent over 30 years in the Stamford-based company, disclosed that he would love to see The American Nightmare challenge The Ring General to a potential fight. Meanwhile, he claimed Rhodes could become the promotion's only world champion:
"I would love Cody to jump in Gunther's face and say, 'You know what? You're the champ, I'm the champ; let's have one champion, and let's have a match and see who gets it.' Cody can definitely carry it. There's no doubt about it. Cody can carry one title for this company," he said.
The World Heavyweight Championship was only introduced a little over a year ago. It would be interesting to see if the company would consider unifying it with the Undisputed WWE Championship.
