Matt Hardy shares last-minute Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens WWE title prediction
Cody Rhodes will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 14. In a recent podcast episode, wrestling legend Matt Hardy gave his thoughts on who will leave the show with the title.
On April 7, Rhodes dethroned Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 to win his first WWE world title. The American Nightmare became allies with Owens earlier in 2024. However, they are now bitter rivals after Owens took exception to Rhodes' temporary alliance with Reigns.
Hardy said on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy that he does not expect to see a title change at the event:
"It's pro wrestling, so I would never say never and you never know. I like to keep it unpredictable. My guess is that they'll have a hell of a match but Cody will retain, but I don't know. I could also be wrong too. I think Cody is still going to ride high as the top guy and the number one babyface as the champion." [13:49 – 14:09]
Owens has not held a WWE world title since losing the Universal Championship to Goldberg at Fastlane 2017.
Matt Hardy explores possible Cody Rhodes title loss
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, The Hardy Boyz often traded the World Tag Team Championship with Edge & Christian and The Dudley Boyz.
Based on that booking logic, Matt Hardy understands why WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H might consider taking the title off Cody Rhodes:
"Keep in mind, Vince [former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon] would always have the mindset like titles help the wrestler or the act get over, but if the act is already massively over then they really don't need the titles. Look at The Hardy Boyz's Tag Team title reigns in WWE, they never ended up being long because it's like, 'Ah, you really don't need the titles.'" [17:07 – 17:24]
Rhodes previously retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against Owens at Bash in Berlin on August 31. In his most recent televised match, the 39-year-old beat Chad Gable in a non-title bout on the December 6 episode of SmackDown.
