Mick Foley reveals that one of the most iconic moments in his WWE career began as a joke that turned serious

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has reflected on his iconic Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker. He revealed that one of the spots in the match actually began as a joke that Terry Funk made.

At the King of the Ring Premium Live Event in 1998, Mankind collided with The Deadman in the second-ever Hell in a Cell Match. He immediately climbed on top of the cell after making his entrance, and the two stars fought each other on the roof. In one of the most memorable moments in wrestling history, The Phenom threw Mankind off the cell onto the announce table. Later on, 'Taker Chokeslammed Mrs. Foley's Baby Boy through the roof into the ring.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated in a recent interview, Mick Foley said that Terry Funk came up with the idea for him to start the match on top of the cage, but it was originally a joke. Foley took it seriously and did the spot.

“Terry said the only way I could compete with what The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels accomplished in the very first Hell in a Cell match was to start the match on top of the cage,” said Mick Foley. “It began as a joke, but by the end, neither of us were laughing. And then I started thinking that was exactly what I should do.” [H/T: Sports Illustrated]

Shawn Michaels names bouts with Mick Foley as some of his most underrated matches

The Hardcore Legend has shared the ring with some of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. One of them is Shawn Michaels.

During an interview with The Schmo, The Heartbreak Kid reflected on his match against Mick Foley at WWE In Your House 10: Mind Games in 1996. He called it one of his most underrated matches.

"I don't know if they were fused with the two matches that I'm pretty proud of, [but one of my most underrated feuds] was the one with Mankind. Mick and I had a hell of a match at [WWF] Mind Games, but it was just a one-shot deal. And it's one of those things that I always feel like had Mick and I had a better opportunity to have a much bigger storyline, we could have really done some fantastic things."
