Motor City Machine Guns are no longer special, according to WWE veteran (Exclusive)

Motor City Machine Guns made their WWE debut on the October 18 episode of SmackDown. Former WWE writer Vince Russo worked with the tag team in TNA and believes they are no longer as special as they once were.

Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin defeated A-Town Down Under and Los Garza to advance in the WWE Tag Team Championship number one contenders' tournament. Earlier in the show, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa beat Pretty Deadly and The Street Profits.

Russo thinks Motor City Machine Guns deserve credit for influencing today's athletic style of tag-team wrestling. However, on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing With Russo, he also explained to host Mac Davis why their in-ring approach does not stand out in 2024:

"Here's the problem, though. They were one of the first tag teams to utilize that style. Everybody uses it now, so it's not special. Like I said, man, I was watching them do things on this show today that Gargano and Ciampa just did 30 minutes ago. That's what made them special, bro, they were doing that stuff, I mean, literally 10, 15 years ago, man, before anybody else was doing it. Now everybody's doing it." [2:19 – 2:49]

How Vince Russo would tell Motor City Machine Guns' backstory

In recent years, WWE has hired dozens of athletes in their early 20s and taught them how to wrestle at the Performance Center training facility. By contrast, Alex Shelley, 41, and Chris Sabin, 42, recently received their first big opportunity with the company after two decades in the business.

Vince Russo thinks Motor City Machine Guns' promos should revolve around the fact that WWE overlooked them for so many years:

"The story can't just be, 'Oh, we were doing this when nobody else was doing it.' Who cares? Because now everybody else is doing it. It's gotta be, 'You never gave us the time of day, you never called us, we were never good enough, we were always the red-headed stepchild,' and then start doing some things with TNA talent." Sabin and Shelley will face Ciampa and Gargano on the October 25 episode of SmackDown. The winners will challenge Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa for the WWE Tag Team Championship.
