"Not their fault" - WWE veteran explains why Motor City Machine Guns' debut was a flop (Exclusive)
Former WWE head writer spoke about the Motor City Machine Guns debuting on SmackDown this week. The tandem was in a tag team title number one contenders’ tournament on the blue brand.
The duo of Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin have influenced the modern-day tag team game and are former three-time TNA Wrestling tag team champions. The Motor City Machine Guns became the newest addition to the WWE tag team division as they debuted on SmackDown and took the blue brand by storm with their stellar performance.
On the latest episode of BroDown, Vince Russo mentioned that WWE did not build enough hype for the Motor City Machine Guns' debut. The veteran writer pointed out that the creative team should build up any debut or return with enough vignettes and video packages so that when the stars arrive, the fans should pop for them.
"Let's make this clear, not their fault. They don't write the television. I say this all the time. When you know somebody is debuting, when you know somebody is coming back from injury, when you know you've somebody new, you've got to set the table. You got to set the table for weeks and weeks and weeks. So when they finally arrive at the right time, that place explodes. They even brought up and acknowledged TNA. The last I checked, TNA was doing 100,000 viewers. So you can't assume people know who these guys are." [From 40:00 onwards]
Motor City Machine Guns had an impressive debut this week as they defeated A Town Down Under and Los Garza to advance to the next round of the tag team championship number one contenders’ tournament.
They will face #DIY next week to decide who will challenge The Bloodline for the WWE Tag Team Championship.
