Only an "absolute idiot" would believe Vince McMahon creative narrative, WWE veteran says
Netflix's Vince McMahon docuseries has been the talk of the wrestling world since it was released on September 25. Former WWE writer Vince Russo does not think the narrative surrounding McMahon's creative input was accurately told during the six episodes.
Mr. McMahon revolves around the former WWE Chairman's life inside and outside the wrestling business. It also delves into his successes as a promoter, including the creation of WWE's popular Attitude Era.
Russo was WWE's head writer when the Attitude Era began in the late 1990s. On his YouTube channel, the one-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion claimed the docuseries gave McMahon too much credit for that period in the company's history:
"Writing a wrestling show, a weekly show, bro, is a full-time job," Russo said. "It was my full-time job. You do not do that if you are running a company, and anybody who believes that is an absolute idiot. But there's not gonna be a Vince Russo shoutout and that's cool because Vince McMahon wants you to believe that it was all him, and that's fine, bro." [5:01 – 5:36]
Russo departed WWE in 1999 to join WCW. He decided to leave after McMahon advised him to focus on work and hire a nanny to look after his children.
Vince Russo on how Vince McMahon's WWE roster viewed him
During Vince Russo's run as a WWE writer, he created storylines for top stars including Mick Foley, The Rock, Steve Austin, and The Undertaker.
Russo thinks wrestlers from the Attitude Era appreciate his input even if Vince McMahon seemingly does not:
"I've said a million times before, I know what I did, I know what I wrote, I know what my contributions were, and not only that, bro, so do the people that I work with, I promise you. The Rock, Austin, 'Taker, Mick. They are well aware, bro, well aware of what my impact was or my influence was when I worked at the WWF [WWE]." [5:37 – 6:08]
Russo recently revealed why McMahon called him a "failure" and a "loser" when they last interacted.
