Only "The nerds" watch wrestling, says infuriated former WWE writer (Exclusive)
A former WWE name recently expressed his frustration with the state of pro wrestling today, claiming that only "nerds" were fans at this point. According to him, the golden age of pro wrestling is long gone.
Wrestling took a turn in terms of popularity after Vince McMahon started expanding his father's promotion, making it a nationwide entertainment industry. This soon grew to a worldwide status, with other companies also contributing to the progress. Particular periods, like the Attitude Era, were especially entertaining and successful times in the business.
However, Vince Russo believes that the prime days of pro wrestling are behind now. Speaking on Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Outlaws, he stated:
"The world in general has passed the wrestling business by. That's why you got all the... The nerds. The nerds are today's wrestling fans bro. Because guess what, the nerds are the last ones to be hip and cool bro. So the world has passed the professional wrestling business by and they have intention of whatsoever bro of bringing it back up to speed." [From 06:06 to 06:35]

In order to prove his point, Vince Russo further took the example of The Rock, John Cena, and even The Undertaker.
Over the last few months, fans have seen John Cena announce his retirement tour. Furthermore, The Rock is also expected to return to WWE to continue his storyline with Cody Rhodes at some point. On top of that, The Undertaker has also hinted that he has one more match left in him.
"Like I said bro, what are we seeing? John Cena's farewell tour. We know the Rock is coming back. 'Taker's talking about one last match. We're gonna keep going to that well and going to that well bro." [From 06:36 to to 06:50]
It remains to be seen what WWE plans to do next in its programming to keep things fresh.
