Real reason why WWE booked Damian Priest vs. Gunther, predicts ex-writer
Damian Priest will challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series: WarGames. A former WWE writer recently predicted why the company booked the clash.
The Archer of Infamy went head-to-head against The Ring General earlier this year at WWE SummerSlam. However, he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Gunther when his former Judgment Day stablemate Finn Balor turned on him. After recently winning a Fatal Four-Way Match on RAW, Priest earned another shot at the title. He will now fight the champion at the upcoming premium live event. On his Wrestling with Freddie podcast, former writer Freddie Prinze Jr. claimed the match was booked to rebuild The Ring General.
Earlier this month, Gunther lost to the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes at the premium live event in Saudi Arabia and failed to capture the Crown Jewel Championship. Prinze Jr. now believes the company booked the World Heavyweight Champion to beat Priest to regain his lost momentum.
"Unless they pressed pause on the Damian Priest story and that's the reason they're gonna give this another shot, which it doesn't feel like that to me, it feels like they need someone who looks like a legit contender to re-establish Gunther after that loss at Crown Jewel that he's the man," he said.
The Hollywood star pointed out that he does not see Gunther losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Priest unless the company plans to have the title go back and forth between the two RAW Superstars. Nevertheless, he stated that the match is likely to make The Ring General look good after his crushing defeat in Saudi Arabia.
"I don't see Gunther losing unless, and I've used this example multiple times, the only way I can see it working is if it goes back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, Priest, Gunther, and everybody else is like, 'Yo, we want our shot.' And they're like, 'Screw you!' Every once in a while there's a Triple Threat. In the Triple Threat they get squashed and then, you know, Gunther or Priest wins again. But I think this is to make Gunther look good. Both guys are gonna look good but it's to make the champ re-establish him as the champ because now there's like this fracture in his armor and we need to seal that fracture up," he added. Ex-WWE head writer predicts the outcome of the Gunther vs. Damian Priest match
On Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing with Russo, former WWE head writer Vince Russo addressed the upcoming clash between Gunther and Damian Priest at Survivor Series: WarGames.
The wrestling veteran predicted that The Ring General would emerge victorious and retain his World Heavyweight Championship.
"I think it's just filler. I think they are gonna keep it. Especially, especially with Cody just beating Gunther at Crown Jewel, I don't see them beating Gunther again," he said. [3:19 onwards]
It could get really interesting on WWE RAW if Priest surprisingly dethrones Gunther at the Survivor Series on November 30 in Vancouver.
