WWE News: Rey Mysterio on working with LU, WWE, Del Rio's exit and more
The latest interview by Ring Rust Radio features the former WWE Superstar, Rey Mysterio. After leaving the company in 2015, Mysterio started working with AAA, a wrestling promotion based in Mexico. Due to a financial dispute, he left AAA and joined Lucha Underground (LU) later that year.
During this interview, he was asked about his decision to sign with Lucha Underground. Mysterio stated that he was impressed with the concept of the show and revealed that he wanted to be associated with similar things during his tenure in WCW and WWE.
As Lucha Underground portrays the high-flying style of wrestling, Rey believes he’s at the right place and was quoted as saying that:
“What better way for me to finish my career—if it is my destiny here in Lucha Underground—to finish with the style I originally began with and going back to my roots.”
Mysterio has been working as ‘the ultimate underdog’ throughout his in-ring career. Contradictorily, Lucha Underground portrays him as a favourite instead of the underdog in a certain fight. This, however, couldn’t change the mindset of ‘the biggest little man’, who prefers to identify himself as an underdog because the fans have supported him for that very reason.
‘The master of 619’ feels that the way Lucha Underground is shot, differentiates the product from any other wrestling show. “I really don't consider this like a true wrestling company. It's more and more like a television series with lucha libre displayed at its best”, he added.
Rey has a desire to capture the Lucha Underground Championship as well. According to the former WWE World Champion, a reign as the main champion of any organisation “is always good to have on your resume” and the longevity of the reign does not matter at all.
Mysterio, who is famous for his fast-paced wrestling skills, has been excited about the re-establishment of the Cruiserweight division in WWE. “I think a lot of the fans want to see the high flying action and be entertained. I don't think there is a better division out there than the cruiserweights to do that”, remarked the former Cruiserweight Champion.
Rey believes that WCW portrayed the cruiserweight wrestling at its best but WWE were unable to maintain the glory of the division. However, he is hopeful that the introduction of this new division will raise the bar of cruiserweight wrestling to where it needs to be.
Towards the end of the interview, he discussed the second stint of Alberto Del Rio in WWE. Despite sharing a friendly connection with Del Rio, Mysterio clarified that his relation with the WWE won’t be affected by this scenario.
Both of them shared great in-ring chemistry while working for WWE and Mysterio is eagerly waiting to work with him in Lucha Underground.
