Rey Mysterio thought WWE was "not interested" in him after buying out WCW
Rey Mysterio initially thought WWE was "not interested" in him before his debut in the Stamford-based promotion. This seemingly delayed his eventual debut in the company.
Rey Mysterio is widely regarded as one of the greatest cruiserweights in professional wrestling. Despite his small stature, Mysterio has proven time and again that size doesn't matter. He has faced some of the biggest stars in wrestling and overcome them. Before his arrival in WWE, Mysterio initially made a name for himself in WCW due to his high flying moves, which were new to the American audience at the time. However, after WWE bought out WCW, Mysterio didn't debut for the Stamford-based promotion until after some time.
During a recent interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Rey Mysterio mentioned that WWE had told him to wait out the rest of his WCW contract since he was making more money. This led him to believe that the company was not interested in him due to his size.
"I think at the time, I was probably making a little too much in WCW money-wise and the contract was still running when the company was bought out," Mysterio said. "The conversation at the time was, 'Sit back, enjoy your pay for the rest of the year that's in your contract, and once it's expired, we'll sit down and we'll negotiate.' At the time, I thought it was a way for them to say, 'We're not really interested.' That's what I thought because I had always heard that [I am] too small. Definitely too small for WWE, and that it wasn't going to happen." [H/T - WrestlingInc.]
Rey Mysterio opens up on his retirement window
Rey Mysterio is in the latter part of his career. Considering he is near the end of his career, his goals are different from he first started. As more days pass by, people talk about his retirement more and more.
During the same interview, Rey gave some insight into his retirement. He wondered if he still wanted to wrestle for another two or three years but also noted that his body feels great at the moment.
"I don’t until it’s being brought up, and when my wife brings that up, that’s when I pause. I don’t know if I want to do it another two years, three years. I kind of listen to my body and my mindset, because my body’s been feeling great. And with all the benefits that I get from doing things like the cold plunge and the sauna. Overall, my mind has to be in the right place, so that’s probably the hardest thing for me. Because, sometimes, the age factor comes into mind, not in the moment, but thinking ahead, like I want to be able to still move around and walk at 55 or 56. Is my body going to feel the same?" It will be interesting to see if Rey Mysterio performs on WWE RAW, knowing that the star is scheduled for a singles match against Dominik Mysterio this week.
