Rey Mysterio tried to convince frustrated WWE star not to quit, Stevie Richards recalls
Stevie Richards worked for WWE between 1999 and 2008. In a recent YouTube video, the veteran wrestler disclosed details about Rey Mysterio's involvement in Palmer Canon's abrupt exit from the company.
Canon, real name Brian Mailhot, performed as a television network executive in the mid-2000s. The former developmental wrestler's WWE run ended when he left a European tour early after an incident with John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL).
Richards said on The Stevie Richards Show that Canon struggled to adapt to the locker room. He added that Rey Mysterio tried to stop the former WWE personality from quitting:
"They [other wrestlers] came down on him pretty hard," Richards stated. "As a matter of fact, I think Nova [former WWE wrestler Simon Dean] told me the story that they were overseas and he just went home and that was the end. Rey Mysterio was trying to tell him, 'No, no, no, please don't go,' and he just went home and he was done." [7:15 – 7:31]
Richards also told a story about the NXT star who was kicked out of the locker room after mistakenly drinking Booker T's Red Bull.
Bruce Prichard addressed Palmer Canon's WWE departure
In 2021, creative team member Bruce Prichard spoke about Palmer Canon on his Something to Wrestle podcast.
Prichard confirmed reports of an incident with JBL and claimed Canon did not fit in with the rest of the locker room:
"He was brought in, was not a good fit. JBL gets a lot of heat and gets blamed for a lot of things, maybe just because he's the loudest, but John was not the only one who had issues with Mr. Canon. And, again, it just isn't a fit."
Canon also wrestled occasionally on the main roster. His final match ended in defeat against Funaki on April 19, 2006, at a live event in Italy.
