Roman Reigns win made history for major WWE star
Roman Reigns has dominated WWE in recent years with very few losses. There was a time when Roman's win-loss record was not as lopsided, and several superstars can say they have defeated The Head of the Table. Now, another multi-time champion is opening up on how he's benefited from defeating Reigns and making history with him.
The Original Tribal Chief battled Baron Corbin in late 2019, leading to King Corbin defeating Reigns at WWE TLC in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match, thanks to The Revival and Dolph Ziggler. TLC 2019 marked the last time Reigns was pinned until three years, six months, and 17 days later at Money in the Bank 2023, where The Usos defeated him and Solo Sikoa after Jey Uso got the pin.
Corbin's TLC win also marked the last time Roman was pinned in singles action until four years, three months, and 24 days later at Night Two of WrestleMania XL, where Cody Rhodes captured the Undisputed Championship.
The Lone Wolf stood tall as the only wrestler to pin Reigns until The American Nightmare finished his story at WrestleMania. Speaking to WrestleZone, Corbin was asked how it feels to be a part of history with his fellow former football player.
"It’s amazing to have that, and Roman elevates everybody that he’s around, whether it’s in the ring or in promos or whatever. So, to continue to have my name for so long in the same conversation as Cody, and Roman, and all the other people that fell short of beating Roman. It made me feel like I was always in the mix," Baron Corbin said.
Corbin continued and recalled how the Roman accolade followed him to the NXT locker room. He also made an interesting remark on how the idea of dethroning Reigns was wishful thinking.
"Even when I was in NXT, they are going, 'Corbin’s still the only one that beat him. Maybe he’s the one that can beat Roman and take the title.' So, it’s cool to kind of have people that think that maybe I was the guy to do it at some point. Wishful thinking on all of our parts, but it’s cool to always have your name in the mix with guys like that," Baron Corbin said.
Reigns defeated Corbin in two Loser Eats Dog Food matches at WWE live events in January 2020, but Super SmackDown on January 31 saw Reigns and The Usos defeat Corbin, Ziggler, and Robert Roode. Corbin was covered in buckets of dog food and forced to eat the slop. This came weeks after the heels showered Roman in dog food.
Baron Corbin fighting for WWE championship match
Baron Corbin has been with WWE since August 2012. The former NFL player is back on SmackDown after returning to NXT for almost one year last summer.
The Lone Wolf has held just one main roster singles title. He defeated AJ Styles for the WWE United States Championship at Hell in a Cell 2017, in a Triple-Threat Match that included Shawn Spears. Corbin marked the seventh anniversary of the win last week by responding to a fan who called on the 40-year-old to once again chase the title, currently held by LA Knight.
"I agree!! Just need the opportunity!! I'm fighting like hell for it . Let's go!" Baron Corbin wrote.
Corbin is currently teaming with Apollo Crews on WWE's blue brand. Their last televised match was a SmackDown loss to Los Garza on August 30. The veterans defeated Los Garza in a dark match on October 4.
