Sonya Deville sends three-word message following recent success on WWE RAW
Sonya Deville's return to WWE was rather quiet. After spending time off from August 2023 to May 2024 owing to a torn ACL, Deville is officially back in the game. She appears to be ready to disrupt the scene on the women's division of the company's flagship show.
Sonya Deville had only won her first title in WWE prior to her injury—the Women's Tag Team Championship. Unfortunately, she did not get a run with it. But the 30-year-old has moved on from it, at least for now, as she has recruited ex-UFC mauler Shayna Baszler and rising star Zoey Stark to form a new faction.
Taking to Instagram, Sonya Deville dropped a message after defeating the 2024 Queen of the Ring runner-up Lyra Valkyria this past Monday night in only her second match since returning to television. She led by example once again after scoring a win over Zelina Vega the week before:
"Fight mode activated. 👊," Deville wrote.
The former Women's Tag Team Champion herself has an MMA background. She has competed in three fights, winning two of them. Deville, Baszler, and Stark are an interesting pairing and WWE Creative appears to be taking it slow with them, but the steps are certainly in the right direction so far.
Sonya Deville found out about her injury mid-way through her match on WWE SmackDown
After winning the Women's Tag Team Championship, Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green had a match on the July 28 episode of SmackDown against top stars Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair. Considering it a massive opportunity, Sonya Deville was not ready to give up albeit she understood something was wrong.
She discussed her train of thought during the bout recently on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, admitting that she had no idea at first. However, as the match progressed, the program went to commercial break, which allowed her to stay away from the action at least for a little while:
So I’m hopping on the apron and anyone in the live audience was probably like, What the heck is she doing? But I’m hopping up in down on the apron trying to gauge if I can trust my knee. And sure enough, it was sketchy at best. I was like, Oh God, well, I’m in a match with Bianca, Charlotte, Chelsea, it’s a tag match, no less. I’m not about to change the entire match right now on live TV," she said.
It took Sonya Deville eight years to win her first belt in WWE. Perhaps the next one won't take that long.
