Stephanie McMahon's telling reaction to father's return didn't get enough publicity, says former WWE name
Due to Netflix's deep dive into the former WWE Chairman's controversial life and career, Vince McMahon is back in the news. Former WWE host Matt Camp recently noted how Stephanie McMahon's reaction to Vince's return in 2023 was a telling sign of the future.
Despite being forced to retire in 2022, Vince McMahon returned the following year and even became the executive chairman of TKO following the WWE and UFC merger. His world came crashing down once again in 2024 when Janel Grant filed a lawsuit against the former booker and the company, accusing him of sexual misconduct and trafficking.
Stephanie McMahon had initially also returned after her father's first resignation and served as the CO-CEO until Vince McMahon's reinstatement to the board.
While speaking on Busted Open, Matt Camp felt that Stephanie's departure from the WWE after Vince's comeback pretty much revealed what kind of human being he was. Camp also noted that Triple H and Stephanie McMahon's alleged vote against Vince's return didn't get enough attention from the press:
"Stephanie is not around anymore, but when Vionce retired back in June a couple of years ago, you know, she was a little more front and center. When he came back, she said, I'm not doing this anymore, and that told me a lot. That told me a lot about the human being where his own family was like, 'Yeah, see you later.' Hunter and Stephanie voted against him! They voted against him coming back, their own father and father-in-law, and I never felt that got a lot of publicity. That is so telling." [From 17:07 onwards]
Matt Camp admits people didn't feel great about their WWE treatment
Camp spent a few years in the WWE as the host of The Bump and was aware of the backstage mood within the company. He previously revealed how several employees were happy about Vince McMahon's retirement but were not surprised when he showed up again to regain power.
Even beyond the accusations, Matt Camp admitted that many people weren't pleased with how they "were treated on a human level."
He explained:
"I speak from experience here because I worked for the man. He was signing my checks, and I know we did our review podcast, and I had some people going, 'You don't have a problem taking the check.' Yes, and I know a lot of people who worked for him didn't feel great about things that would go on, just in terms of wrestling booking and how people would be treated on a human level." The Netflix documentary on Vince McMahon did not delve deeper into the most recent scandal against the 79-year-old, but it has undoubtedly shut the door for another attempt at a return.
