The Undertaker reveals why Gunther is his "guy"
The Undertaker retired from WWE in 2020 after 34 years of in-ring competition. The Deadman stays busy these days with various projects in and out of the company, and he keeps up with the WWE product. Taker has just made very interesting remarks on how WWE has changed and what he thinks of Gunther.
The Phenom caused an uproar among fans and wrestlers in January 2021 when he appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience and said the current WWE product was "soft," acknowledging that the comments would probably upset some people. The interview occurred around the time of The Ring General's historic WWE NXT UK Championship reign, but more than a year before the name change from WALTER, Imperium's call-up to the main roster, and the historic Intercontinental Championship reign.
The Undertaker recently welcomed interviewer Chris Van Vliet as the guest on his Six Feet Under podcast. The 59-year-old Hall of Famer had some props for the current WWE product and revealed a backstage moment Gunther had with his four-year-old adopted son, Kolt. He also praised the 2024 King of the Ring for his abilities.
"I think the product has turned a corner. ... There's a little more storytelling going on. [Panel agreed wrestling is at its best spot in years] And Gunther's my guy. Two years ago, he had about a 10-minute conversation with my little boy. My little boy is fascinated by him... Kolt is fascinated by him. They had a conversation, out of the clear blue, and he sat there and just talked to him. That's not why he's my guy... he's my guy because he knows how to work, and tell a story. But, yeah... I'm really high on him," The Undertaker said. [From 1:41:26 to 1:42:47]
Taker then agreed that Gunther is a future World Champion. The wrestling legend also said he doubts Gunther knows how big of a fan he is.
The Undertaker addresses WWE steel chair attack rumors
The Undertaker is widely regarded as one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time, but the wrestler known as Big Evil had a reputation for being a tough worker at times.
Former WWE and WCW star Chris Kanyon worked with Taker and Kane in 2001, which led to The Brothers of Destruction retaining the WCW Tag Team Championship while capturing the WWE Tag Team Championship from Kanyon and Diamond Dallas Page in a Steel Cage match at SummerSlam. There has been a story making the rounds for years, which alleged that Taker maliciously hit Kanyon with a steel chair because he was gay.
On a recent Six Feet Under episode, Taker defended his use of chairs over the years, as did guest Maven, and made an interesting comment on how he hates all people equally. After acknowledging he was getting upset over the chair shot accusations, Taker then addressed the Kanyon rumor.
"I’ve been accused of smashing Kanyon with a chair because he was gay. I didn’t even know he was gay. I didn’t even know until years later. I couldn't care less [that Kanyon was gay] but there's people out there that have created that rumor, 'Oh, Undertaker smashed him.' Undertaker swung a chair the way Undertaker swung a chair. If I swung a chair at somebody, the way I swung it, I'd expect the same one back. Watch me and Triple H. He beat the crap out of me. That's just the way I learned how to swing a chair," The Undertaker said.
Kanyon is considered to be one of the most underrated stars of WCW. He passed away on April 2, 2010, at the age of 40.
