Top WWE champion 'loses' clean; multiple pinfalls close major show
WWE Superstar Trick Williams defended his NXT Championship against Eddy Thorpe in the main event of this week’s NXT. The match ended in chaos and controversy.
During the closing moments, Thorpe hit the Impaler DDT on Trick and had the champion pinned, but the referee was down and unable to make the count. As Williams recovered, he rolled up Thorpe for a near fall. Thorpe regained control with a German Suplex, followed by a big boot in the corner. He attempted another big boot, but Trick countered with the Trickshot out of nowhere.
Another referee had come to sort things out in the ring meanwhile. Williams collapsed onto Thorpe for the pinfall, but Thorpe had his arm draped over Trick as well. Both referees involved counted simultaneous pinfalls, resulting in confusion over the outcome.
General Manager Ava arrived at ringside, visibly frustrated by the situation. After discussing with the referees, announcer Mike Rome declared that Trick Williams was still the NXT Champion. Thorpe confronted Ava and voiced his frustration. The chaos escalated further when Shawn Michaels came out to defuse the tension, but Thorpe shoved the WWE Hall of Famer.
This prompted Trick Williams to attack Thorpe which meant that he remained the last man standing to close the show. The controversial finish has left fans wondering how WWE will address the situation on next week’s episode of NXT.
