Huge WWE star was planned to end Gunther's historic championship reign, says ex-host, before Sami Zayn
Gunther became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history after holding the title for 666 days. A former WWE host recently revealed that the company was planning for a top RAW star to end The Ring General's run before Sami Zayn, but ended up scrapping the idea.
The superstar in question is none other than Jey Uso. The former Bloodline member challenged Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship on the February 19, episode of Monday Night RAW. However, he failed to dethrone The Ring General. On a recent episode of his The Wrestling Matt podcast, former WWE host Matt Camp claimed the company initially planned for that square-off to happen at WrestleMania XL.
Camp added that WWE had plans for Jey to beat Gunther and win the Intercontinental Championship before defending it against his brother Jimmy Uso:
"I will tell you, there were plans at the beginning of the year for Jey and Gunther to happen for the IC Title. They ended up doing it on RAW. But that was in play as a potential WrestleMania match. That was in play in between the [Royal] Rumble and WrestleMania, which I know had eventually happened. That was in play. What about this, Jey beating Gunther was in play for the IC Title before WrestleMania with the idea of doing Jimmy [vs.] Jey for the IC Title at WrestleMania. I know that was talked about," he said. While Gunther dropped the title to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL, Jey defeated Jimmy Uso in a brother versus brother match at the Show of Shows.
Jey Uso became the number-one contender for the Intercontinental Championship on WWE RAW
Since splitting from The Bloodline, Jey Uso has had multiple opportunities to capture the Intercontinental Championship or the World Heavyweight Title. However, he has failed to win either so far.
Last night on the red brand, Main Event Jey defeated Ilja Dragunov, Braun Strowman, and Pete Dunne in a Fatal Four-Way Match to become the new number-one contender for Bron Breakker's Intercontinental Championship. After RAW went off the air, the two superstars had a face-off inside the ring.
Although he has held several tag team titles, Jey has been vocal about his desire to win a singles one. It will be interesting to see if he will succeed in his quest when he squares off against Breakker.
