Vince Russo reveals what he told Hulk Hogan backstage at WCW Bash at the Beach 2000 (Exclusive)
Hulk Hogan and Vince Russo's Bash at the Beach 2000 incident was among the most controversial in WCW history. After defending The Hulkster's creative control comments on Logan Paul's podcast, Russo recently gave his thoughts on what really happened that night.
Bash at the Beach saw Jeff Jarrett lie down and allow Hogan to place his foot on him to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Russo then reversed the decision and badmouthed Hogan before Booker T defeated Jarrett for the title in the main event.
In 2023, former WCW executive Eric Bischoff claimed Russo went off-script. However, on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing With Russo, the one-time WCW World Champion told host Dr. Chris Featherstone that everything went according to the revised plan. He also opened up about his conversation with Hogan:
"I went into the trailer and Hogan pitched his idea to me of what he wanted to do, and that idea was he left with the Heavyweight Title," Russo said. "And then I came back with, 'No, bro, let's not do that. Let's do this,' which is what we did regardless [of] what either one of them [Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan] say. I couldn't care less." Vince Russo on Hulk Hogan's reaction to his pitch
While Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan have a different recollection of events, Vince Russo maintains that the legendary wrestler had no problem with his idea.
Russo added that Hogan likely told the truth to Logan Paul when he said he never played his creative control card in WCW:
"When I presented my story to Hulk, bro, he did not turn around and say, 'Vince, I have creative control. We're doing it the way I laid it out to you. He did not do that, bro. He went along with my revised plan. He said, 'Okay,' but he could have said, 'Nope. I'm leaving with the title. I've got creative control. That's the way we're gonna do it.' He didn't do that, bro, so that's why I kinda wanna take that side here because people calling him a liar, like you said, Chris, it depends how you look at creative control." [5:49 – 6:30]
Russo also explained why he thinks WWE should have handled Odyssey Jones' reported firing differently.
