Vince Russo terrified that legendary 7-time WWE champion legitimately injured himself on SmackDown return (Exclusive)

Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently gave his thoughts on a legendary seven-time champion possibly being legitimately injured on last week's edition of Friday Night SmackDown. The name in question is AJ Styles.

After losing to Cody Rhodes at Clash at the Castle 2024, Styles went on hiatus from WWE television. The Phenomenal One finally returned on last week's edition of the blue brand, where he locked horns with Carmelo Hayes.

However, during the bout, the former Intercontinental Champion might have suffered an injury while performing a Springboard. The match was ultimately called off after Styles fell on the ground while trying to hit his opponent with a Backbreaker. While some reports suggested that AJ Styles' injury was part of a storyline, others called it legitimate.

During a recent edition of Sportskeeda Wrestling's BroDown on Backstage Pass, Vince Russo gave his thoughts on The Phenomenal One's injury. Russo said that it was visible that Styles, who is a former WWE Champion (2), Intercontinental Champion, United States Champion (3), and tag team champion, landed awkwardly on his knee after performing the Springboard.

The former WWE writer also mentioned that he believed it could just be a tweak but the injury looked legitimate.

"When he landed flat on his feet, you did see that knee buckle. Listen, bro, I love him to death. I was working with him when he was just a kid and AJ's up there in age bro and you know Mac, the older you get the body breaks down much, much easier. So, I don't know bro, maybe it was just a tweak. But I'm with you Mac, when they replayed that back, both of those things look pretty legit to me," Russo said. [11:02 - 11:43]

WWE Superstar AJ Styles gave an update on his injury

Following SmackDown, Jackie Redmond confirmed on X/Twitter that AJ Styles suffered a midfoot ligament sprain, also known as Lisfranc injury.

After this, The Phenomenal One sent a message. In his tweet, the former United States Champion assured fans that he would keep them posted about the status of his injury.

"I believe everything happens for a reason. I’ll keep you updated," he tweeted.

Neither Styles nor WWE have provided any updates on The Phenomenal One's injury since the abovementioned tweet. It remains to be seen if his injury was legit or just part of a storyline.
