[WATCH] Gunther reinforces controversial remark about late WWE legend's title reign

Gunther has done something rarely WWE Superstars can do today. He has become debatably the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time by having the longest reign with the belt.

Still clenching on to the prestigious title, The Ring General's run feels fresh after each passing week. He has already crossed the 500-day mark. According to the champion himself, several previous holders of the belt were not great by any means.

Recently, on WWE's The Bump, he called Ultimate Warrior a "showman" and that era of Intercontinental Champions as the "dark ages." Gunther is sticking to his word as he shared the video of his statement on Instagram:

"One of the reasons for my selfless mission...," wrote Gunther.

Gunther will defend the Intercontinental Championship against The Miz at Survivor Series. The 36-year-old megastar is convinced that The A-Lister is no different from the aforementioned legend and needs to retire.

Gunther believes The American Nightmare Cody Rhodes is destined to be his rival in WWE

Earlier this year, The Austrian Anomaly appeared on the podcast My Love Letter To Wrestling. According to the Intercontinental Champion, Rhodes is an "ideal" opponent for him.

Recalling his showdown with Cody Rhodes at the Royal Rumble in January after every other superstar was eliminated in the battle royal, The Ring General stated:

"I think it was super cool to add a little something at the top of it at the end of that match," Gunther said on being the runner-up wrestling eventual winner Cody Rhodes. "In general, I think Cody is someone who is maybe my ideal opposite right now. Going forward, it's going to be a match that... I'm very confident we're going to do that match a couple of times in the next years."

Cody Rhodes has an eventful few weeks ahead on WWE RAW as The American Nightmare prepares for WarGames at Survivor Series. He will team up alongside World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, and Jey Uso to take on The Judgment Day.
