Former WWE Head Writer Vince Russo recently slammed the company's booking of Gunther on RAW while taking a subtle shot at Johnny Gargano.
Gunther participated in his first match on the red brand this week, where he teamed up with his Imperium stablemates to take on the trio of Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and Matt Riddle. However, The Ring General was on the losing end after being thrown over the announce table by Riddle while Zayn and Owens worked in unison to pin Vince.
Speaking on the latest Sportskeeda Wrestling's Legion of RAW, Vince Russo made it clear that he did not like the idea of the Austrian star getting taken out by Riddle.
"What are they doing? Like seriously! You're throwing him over a table. I am going to say what I say every single week. This is a house show on television, that's why you had that finish. The only problem is you have got 1.8 million people watching this and now, to them, Gunther is nothing." [1:23:25 - 1:23:44]
Russo also mentioned how WWE could have booked the match differently instead of throwing the star over the table like "he's a Johnny Gargano."
"Why not, especially Riddle since Riddle is a goofball, handcuff Gunther to the ropes? That's all you got to do. You can handcuff him to the ropes, you're killing the other two guys and he is trying feverishly to break away, that's all you have to do. Then finally when they go over, he breaks out of the chains then give him heat. Why you throwing this dude over a table like he's a Johnny Gargano?" [1:24:32 - 1:25:07]
Johnny Gargano and Gunther recently had a match at WWE live event
Johnny Gargano was absent from WWE programming for a long time after he re-aggravated his shoulder injury last month. While he returned to RAW after the Draft, he is yet to compete in a singles match on TV.
However, the former NXT Champion has been active on live shows. He competed against Gunther on the 13th and 14th May live shows. However, the Ring General came out on top on both occasions.

WWE often tries the matchups on their live shows before they make their way to TV programming, and hence, it is possible that we may very soon witness the two former NXT stars tear it up on the red brand or a premium live event.
