Wrestling legend details the distressing reason behind Sami Zayn losing the Intercontinental Championship
Wrestling veteran Konnan recently spoke about Sami Zayn losing the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam. The star battled Bron Breakker for the title.
Bron Breakker had Sami Zayn on his radar since his main roster debut. He repeatedly attacked the champ and anyone who came out to save him. This led to the two colliding at Money in the Bank where Sami used his experience to prevail over the 26-year-old rookie. However, Bron got one over the champ at SummerSlam.
On a recent episode of Keepin' It 100, the wrestling veteran detailed that Breakker was the hotter star in WWE. He pointed out that Sami was a big deal for a couple of years but his popularity has cooled off since then. He felt it was a great match to get a vicious competitor like Bron over.
"Breakker's hot, Sami's not. Sh*t changes. There was nobody hotter than Sami, almost nobody hotter than him about a year ago. Maybe two or three guys. He just feels stale. When he hit the first Spear, Bron Breakker, people were barking, he was barking. Then he hit the second one, people were even more barking. He's just hot right now. That's good booking. It didn't need to be a long match. You needed to put him over strong and you did." [14:38 - 15:15]
Sami Zayn won the Intercontinental Championship from Gunther
Back at WrestleMania XL, Sami Zayn created history as he ended Gunther's 666-day-long title reign. Sami was the underdog heading into the match as The Ring General had been a dominant champ for nearly two years.
However, Zayn prevailed against all odds and withstood the initial assault from Gunther. He finally ended the match with an earth-shattering Helluva Kick to become the new champ.
It will be interesting to see whether Sami decides to invoke his rematch clause and take on Breakker again in the coming weeks.
