WWE has achieved a "split fan" sentiment with CM Punk and Drew McIntyre, says veteran (Exclusive)
CM Punk and Drew McIntyre's feud is shaping up to be one of the highlights of the year in WWE. According to a veteran, their rivalry has achieved a rare sentiment in the audience where they are split almost equally between supporting the two stars.
Drew McIntyre has been falling short of winning major matches over the last few months, leading to much frustration on his part. His chance to win the World Heavyweight Championship at the Clash at the Castle PLE seemed very possible until CM Punk intervened to ruin his match.
Speaking on Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine hosted by Mac Davis, Apter praised the segment of Punk interfering with Drew's match. He further stated:
"First of all the camera angle was incredibly well done, because he (Drew) didn't know that it was CM Punk. They had the referee to the back and then when Drew went, when he saw him, the reaction was great. If you saw, and I am sure you did, when CM Punk left the ring, the fans were embracing him and yelling out. He was sitting there with the fans, 'CM Punk! CM Punk!' The love him, he can do no wrong. So this is almost like a split fan thing of who the heel is here." [3:43 onwards]
Bill Apter thinks the WWE Universe won't fully turn against CM Punk
According to Bill Apter, CM Punk has carved out such a legacy for himself that the fans will never be able to see him as a full-fledged heel again.
Speaking on Sportskeeda's UnSKripted, the veteran journalist stated what he had observed during the segment between Punk and Drew McIntyre at WWE Clash at the Castle:
"I don't, if in the Drew McIntyre-CM Punk situation when Punk left the ring as the 'referee,' did you notice the fans embracing him and yelling out CM Punk? No matter what he does, I don't think the fans are ever gonna turn against him again. I mean, we are in Drew's hometown!" the Hall of Famer noted. [21:42 onwards]
As of now, it remains to be seen how WWE will handle the intense rivalry in the near future.
