WWE confirms new champion will be crowned following recent title match
WWE has eight championship matches scheduled for this weekend, between Saturday's Bash in Berlin PLE, and Sunday's NXT No Mercy PLE. The weekend kicked off with a first-time-ever title match, while officials clarified previous championship uncertainty.
Pete Dunne recently defeated Je'Von Evans in the latest eight-man WWE Speed tournament finals, earning a shot at Andrade's Speed Championship. Dunne, who also produces Speed matches, won this tournament over Julius Creed and Joaquin Wilde.
Andrade dethroned inaugural champion Ricochet in mid-June, then retained Baron Corbin and Xavier Woods before today's title defense. El Idolo has now retained the WWE Speed Championship over The Bruiserweight. Their first-ever match aired today on the latest championship episode of Speed on X. The back-and-forth contest saw Andrade get the pin with 48 seconds left in the five-minute match.
The inaugural WWE Speed Women's Tournament will begin Wednesday. There has been confusion over the women's bracket, indicating there could be another half-bracket or that just a future #1 contender would be crowned. However, it was corrected today to confirm that the first eight-woman tournament will crown the inaugural Speed Women's Champion.
The women's tournament begins Wednesday at 12 PM ET with IYO SKY vs. Lyra Valkyria. Additional first-round matches are Blair Davenport vs. Naomi, Kairi Sane vs. Elektra Lopez, and Candice LeRae vs. Piper Niven. The championship finals in late September/October will feature SKY or Davenport or Naomi vs. Lopez or Sane or LeRae or Niven.
Pete Dunne is going for WWE Intercontinental Championship
Pete Dunne and Jey Uso moved closer to challenging Bron Breakker for the Intercontinental Championship on this week's RAW.
The Bruiserweight advanced in a #1 contender's tournament by winning a Triple Threat over The Miz and Xavier Woods. Main Event Jey defeated Kofi Kingston and Karrion Kross. Next week's RAW will feature Sheamus vs. Ludwig Kaiser vs. Bronson Reed, plus Dragon Lee vs. Ilja Dragunov vs. Dominik Mysterio.
Monday's winners will advance to a Fatal 4 Way on September 9, with that winner becoming Bron's next challenger. Officials have not confirmed the title match date, but the returning Bad Blood PLE seems unlikely as it is scheduled almost one month later on October 5.
