WWE Hall of Famer questions viability of wrestling, says "not all of it" is must-see TV (Exclusive)
WWE's audience has grown significantly over the years. However, a Hall of Famer believes the company's programming no longer holds the same appeal as it did before.
Since its inception, WWE's TV programming has attempted to grab the attention of all viewers with spectacles and glamour. The Attitude Era, for instance, was one of the most successful periods of the wrestling business as a whole. While the company has grown as time has progressed, Teddy Long thinks that watching it on TV does not feel the same now.
Speaking on Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine hosted by Mac Davis, veteran journalist Bill Apter stated:
"I think RAW and SmackDown for me would be must-see TV. It's hard to take myself out of that equation, I've been doing it so long." [2:27 onwards]
Teddy Long added to the comments and said:
"Some of it is must see TV for me. Not all of it, you know. Like I said, you know with today's wrestling from the Attitude Era, certainly a lot has changed. And I think now it is more entertainment than it is professional wrestling. So I think that has a lot to do with it too. So you know it's not old school no more." [3:11 onwards]
Teddy Long is also not pleased with recently crowned WWE Tag Team Champions
While the Motor City Machine Guns deserve their flowers, Teddy Long believes their booking to become the tag team champions swiftly was a poor decision.
Speaking on another episode of The Wrestling Time Machine, the WWE Hall of Famer discussed how a gradual storyline would have been a better choice. He stated:
"Well, all that's kinda gone down the drain. That's exactly the proper way to do it, you know, get a storyline out of it. Make it mean something so that when they do finally come to a head, when they're gonna go for the titles, then the people now know who they are." [4:50 onwards]
For now, it remains to be seen how MCMG's run in WWE pans out.
