WWE's Montez Ford wants to break longstanding system in professional wrestling

WWE Tag Team Triple Crown Champion Montez Ford has repeatedly addressed his career frustrations lately. He believes it is time to break a longstanding system in the modern era of professional wrestling.

Ford, 34, has often been cited as the next breakout star in the singles division. Unlike many of his peers, who broke into the sports entertainment giant and came from wrestling backgrounds, he has no such credentials. However, the former tag team champion comes from a military athletic background. In a recent interview with The Five Count, Montez Ford pointed to how many of the talents today have prior experience wrestling in the indies, and how that has always been a trend in the business.

For example, the Motor City Machine Guns won the WWE Tag Team Championship in only their third match in the Stamford-based promotion. They have been in the industry for nearly two decades, having wrestled for TNA, ROH, and NJPW, among other promotions. Montez Ford asserted that despite no previous wrestling background, he could find success as a "sports entertainer," and hopefully break the mold of a long-standing system.

"I'm glad I'm one of the examples to have that point proven wrong. I come from a military athletic background. I watched wrestling growing up, but I never, like, never did anything independent-wise. I never did independent scenes. So, I'm glad I'm one of the examples of breaking a mold ofyou don't have to have a wrestling background to become or be successful as a sports entertainer. So, very glad I'm at the forefront of that as well," he said. [From 4:00 to 4:31]

These days what Montez Ford is talking about seems more plausible as athletes like Logan Paul have seen great success in WWE.

Montez Ford had challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship in 2021

In hindsight, the 1,316 days of Roman Reigns as the undisputed top champion in WWE featured a lot of blockbuster matches that fans look back to fondly, against big stars such as Brock Lesnar, John Cena, and Edge, to name a few.

Apart from those names, though, there were a few other title contests that may have gone under the radar. One such match happened on the September 24, 2021, episode of SmackDown. Roman Reigns defended his Universal Championship against Montez Ford. According to the young stalwart, he proved to the locker room that they shouldn't be afraid of The Tribal Chief.

More recently, Ford spoke on behalf of the Street Profits, as he discussed feuding with The Bloodline throughout their main roster run. He called them a "disease" and implied a heel turn could be incoming, which was further teased on SmackDown this past Friday.
