WWE is shoving top star down fans' throats like Vince McMahon did with Roman Reigns, says veteran
WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H has pushed several stars during his regime. Meanwhile, a wrestling veteran recently claimed that a certain superstar's massive push under The Game's creative leadership was similar to what Vince McMahon did with Roman Reigns.
The wrestler in question is none other than Gunther. The Ring General has been one of WWE's top talents since his arrival on the main roster in mid-2022. After a historic 666-day Intercontinental Championship reign, the 37-year-old captured the World Heavyweight Title at SummerSlam. After recently retaining it against Randy Orton at Bash in Berlin, the Imperium leader will defend his gold against Sami Zayn next week on RAW.
When former WWE employee Tommy Carlucci dubbed Gunther "so freaking boring" in the latest episode of the Behind The Turnbuckle: The Last Word podcast, claiming the Austrian was being "shoved down" fans' throats, his co-host, wrestling veteran Jonathan Coachman, compared the RAW Superstar to Roman Reigns.
The Coach pointed out that The Ring General seemed to be getting the same treatment the Original Tribal Chief received from Vince McMahon for four years before the 39-year-old turned heel and kickstarted The Bloodline saga.
"It kind of, and I don't even mean to bring Roman into this, but it feels the years, and I was back there for a cup of coffee during these years, when Vince continued to shove him into the main event every year at WrestleMania. He got booed out of the freaking building. But they got the last laugh because they created The Wiseman, and now he's over like Rover. But for four straight years, nobody wanted to see Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania. This feels like that, Tommy," Coachman said. [19:09-19:36]
Ex-WWE head writer slams Gunther and Sami Zayn's segment on RAW
Last night on RAW, Sami Zayn and Gunther had a heated confrontation, which ended with The Ring General beating down the former Intercontinental Champion before accepting the Canadian's challenge.
On Sportskeeda Wrestling's Legion of RAW, former WWE head writer Vince Russo criticized the segment, stating that it was "third-grade level!"
"My favorite segment [sarcastically]! Remember Jerry Maguire? What was the infamous line? 'You had me at, 'Hello!' I swear to God, bro, I was just waiting for Gunther to turn around to Sami and say, 'You had me at coward!' That got Gunther in the match. He [Sami] called him [Gunther] a coward, and that's it. The C word, bro. I cannot imagine myself sitting at this computer and writing that line. I can't imagine. That is so third-grade level; it's not even funny," he said. [From 52:29 onwards]
Zayn is the only superstar to pin Gunther since the latter's arrival on the main roster. It will be interesting to see if he dethrones The Ring General next Monday.
