WWE SmackDown star claims he's undefeated in dark matches despite losing 39 dark matches in his career
WWE SmackDown having dark matches is common, but on October 4, 2024, fans witnessed four dark matches, one before and three after the show. One superstar who picked up a win claimed that he is undefeated in dark matches despite having lost a whopping 39 dark matches.
This week's episode of SmackDown saw three post-show dark matches, with Liv Morgan facing Lyra Valkyria in a Women's World Championship defense, Sheamus beating his rival Ludwig Kaiser, and Cody Rhodes overcoming Austin Theory. The pre-show dark match saw Baron Corbin and Apollo Crews defeat the Legado Del Fantasma duo of Angel and Berto.
On Instagram, Baron Corbin claimed that he is undefeated in dark matches. While it is true that he is undefeated in dark matches in 2024, his statement is incorrect. According to the records on Cagematch.net, the SmackDown Superstar has lost an incredible 39 dark matches throughout his career between 2016 and 2022.
It should not come as a surprise that The Lone Wolf has such a poor record as dark matches by design are meant for the babyfaces to win in order to send the crowds home happy. Corbin has faced a variety of legends in dark matches, ranging from AJ Styles, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns to names such as Shinsuke Nakamura and more.
Baron Corbin wants to be a World Champion on SmackDown as his last singles title run was 7 years ago
Unfortunately, Baron Corbin has not had a very great start on his return to SmackDown as he has hardly been featured on television. Despite this, he keeps his hopes up of attaining World Championship gold. His last singles title run in the company was in 2017 when he was the United States Champion.
In an interview with WrestleZone, Baron Corbin expressed his desire to become a World Champion in WWE.
"You know, I've been in the ring with every major superstar there is, from [The Undertaker] 'Taker to Roman [Reigns] to [John] Cena to Seth [Rollins]. I've not been in the ring with Cody [Rhodes]. So, getting in there in the mix with him is a goal for me. I've not been in the ring with [Damian] Priest; that's a goal. But it's getting that World Title. I want that on my Wikipedia page. I want that on my list of accomplishments that I was a World Champion. I think now's the time to do that. The momentum I have and the energy I have towards what I'm doing. I think it's important to make that run," Baron Corbin said. [04:40 - 05:13]
The Lone Wolf was close to attaining that goal in the summer of 2017 until his Money in the Bank cash-in failed courtesy of John Cena.
Corbin has been a world title challenger in the years since he has not been able to win the big one.
