WWE star reacts to missing major event in his home county; explains decision

WWE is an international touring company that has been expanding in many top markets around the world. Officials often book homegrown superstars on tours of their native lands for various reasons, including ticket sales and localized storylines. Two veterans, Berto and Angel, have just revealed why they are not returning home later this month.

WWE's SuperShow Summer Tour will see the company return to Mexico on Saturday, July 13, for a live event at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. They will then run Monterrey the next night at the Arena Monterrey venue. These are the first WWE shows in Mexico since two were held in July 2023. Superstars advertised to appear this month include Rey Mysterio, Damian Priest, Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Jey Uso, Santos Escobar, LA Knight, Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley, Liv Morgan, Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair, and Sami Zayn.

A fan took to X today and asked why Berto and Angel are not booked for the upcoming shows south of the border. Amid rumors and speculation on a big PLE, the fan tagged Triple H, Berto, Angel, WWE, and the WWE Español account. Berto shared that post and his message.

The SmackDown Superstar confirmed that he and his older cousin are not working the dates, just like last year, but it's unclear if stablemate Elektra Lopez will be with Escobar.

"This year (as last) we will not be at the shows on #CDMX and #Monterrey July 13 and 14 either. We hope to see you next time! [crossed fingers emoji] [fist emoji] @AngelGarzaWwe @wweespanol," Berto wrote via Google Translate.

Berto posted a follow-up two hours later, explaining why the Legado del Fantasma members are not booked. The third-generation grapplers are sad but understand the situation. The 28-year-old ended the tweet with a bit of hope for a change in the card.

"But it’s understandable, card is tight and the Mexican crowd wants to see other superstars as well! It’s just a little sad that so far we’re not contemplated for it. But we’ll see [fingers crossed emoji]," Berto wrote.

Berto and Angel are both from Monterrey, Nuevo León. This is the city the company is scheduled to run that Sunday. Angel, who is also a nephew to former WCW, WWE, and TNA star Héctor Garza, then chimed in and reminded everyone of their hometown.

"With pride I say, I'm from MONTERREY MX [winking face emoji]," Angel wrote.

Los Lotharios last worked shows in their home country in October 2022. They defeated Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro in the Monterrey opening match, and then the next night, they ran the same match in Mexico City. Before that, the last show in Mexico came in November 2019, where Berto and Cain Velasquez defeated The O.C.

Angel and Berto have made the news as of late because their current contracts expire on August 1. Officials reportedly want to re-sign the Lucha stars as they have been in negotiations, and both have had offers since early June.

WWE returning to Mexico after record-setting events

World Wrestling Entertainment will return to Mexico for two Supershow live events later this month. The company also ran the same venues in Monterrey and Mexico City in July 2023.

World Wrestling Entertainment announced that they broke records with the Monterrey show on Saturday, July 22, last year, and with the Mexico City show the next night. New records were set for the highest attendance and highest-grossing live events in Mexico for 12 years.

The Mexico City event at Arena CDMX also broke venue records for the highest attendance and highest-grossing event ever. A new record for the highest merchandise sales in Mexico City was also confirmed.

Officials will be looking to repeat the success they found in 2023 when they return to Mexico this month. The July 2023 shows drew more than 25,000 fans across both nights.

The Mexico City main event saw then-Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns retain against Rey Mysterio, while then-World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins defeated Dominik Mysterio the following night.
