WWE has terribly fumbled record-breaking champion's character, says Vince Russo (Exclusive)
Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently talked about how the company handled a former Intercontinental Champion's run. According to him, the creative team may have made an unredeemable mistake with the star.
The name in question is none other than Gunther, who had one of the most iconic title reigns as the Intercontinental Champion. His presence and skill in the ring are undeniable, leading him to have a 666-day record-breaking run with the belt. He was taken down by Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL with much difficulty, in a finish that Russo did not approve of.
Speaking on Sportskeeda's Writing with Russo, the former WWE writer expressed his frustration with the booking.
"Bro I am a Gunther fan, but I cannot get out of my head, this dude lost to Sami Zayn. Gunther lost to Sami Zayn, like seriously. When that happened, I am like, they just killed this guy. See, he should have wiped the floor with Sami Zayn. So, like, when you talk about Gunther, I hate to say it. I love the guy, he is unbelievable, but you don't forget things like that." The former WWE writer had even compared Gunther to Roman Reigns in the past
According to Vince Russo, The Ring General may already have surpassed The Tribal Chief in some ways.
Speaking on another episode of Sportskeeda's Writing with Russo, the former head writer talked about how Gunther's character had more nuances to it than Roman Reigns. He explained:
"When you look at that show, and you look at just the character work, bro, that guy is top three. No doubt about it, bro, top three. He is better than Reigns because Reigns is very one-dimensional. Gunther shows like different sides of personality, bro. That guy is a good man." [9:40 onward]
Gunther became the World Heavyweight Champion at SummerSlam 2024 by taking down Damian Priest in an impressive match. Only time will tell what WWE has in store for him next.
