WWE veteran regrets not protecting his father in match against Kurt Angle on SmackDown (Exclusive)

Kurt Angle had an incredible first tenure in WWE, lasting seven years from 1999 to 2006, and became one of the all-time greats. His multi-year stint on SmackDown was certainly one for the books, but there were some things that could have been done differently, according to Chavo Guerrero, who says that his father wasn't protected in their match on the blue brand.

It was 2002, and Chavo Guerrero teamed up with his father - wrestling legend Chavo Classic, for a match on SmackDown against Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle.

Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling's Bill Apter, Chavo Guerrero revealed that during their tag team match, he regrets the aggressive shoot style that they wrestled. He admitted that his father spoke to all of them about it:

"They came back and put him in the main event. With me and him against Eddie [Guerrero] and Kurt Angle. And I feel really bad, we were going, we were at the peak of our wrestling... I was trying to protect him out there and keep him going, but I felt bad. I should have protected him a lot more. When we went to the back he said 'Gosh dang! You guys are three-quarters shooting out there.'" [From 04:22 to 04:52]

Chavo Classic revealed that he had to legitimately pull Kurt Angle to grab him, and his son thought that they were right in wrestling the way they did. That's when he realized that his father wasn't 35 years old anymore:

"I'm like 'That's just what we do' and he went 'No, you guys, I couldn't grab anything. I went to pull Kurt Angle and he's pulling away' and he literally had to shoot to grab something. I said 'Well, that's how we work'. But we were that tight, that if I go to waist lock you and you can get out, you get out. But we did it, we were so tight that I thought 'We should have protected him a little more'. And then I realized 'Alright, he's a 55-year-old Chavo Classic and not a 35-year-old.'" He was full of praise and nostalgia for his colleagues, who became brothers through their years on the road together. It's a memorable time in WWE history that helped establish SmackDown - a failing brand with low expectations.
