Opinion: Dean Ambrose's RAW promo proves heels can exist in the WWE in 2018
In the WWE, it seems that heels and faces have gone through a bit of a loop.
Despite Roman Reigns constantly promising to fight for the fans, the Big Dog was repeatedly booed by fans (until his leukemia diagnosis) throughout his singles run.
Similarly, Kevin Owens, who often attacked and ambushed babyfaces was beloved by the fans, despite his villainous ways.
But this week, Dean Ambrose was able to do the seemigly unthinkable, proving there was still room for true heels in WWE.
Appearing on RAW in a gas-mask and security, the Lunatic Fringe's speech began like so many heels before him, with the generic "I hate the WWE Universe" story.
But not long after, Ambrose turned his attention to upcoming TLC opponent Seth Rollins, who Ambrose betrayed in October this year, four years after the Architect did the same in 2014.
In his promo, Ambrose criticized before Rollins and Reigns, saying that the two became focussed on being embraced by the fans, instead of focussing on the Shield's ruthlessness.
This was the highlight of the promo for me, as Ambrose described himself as the only morally righteous member of the group, showing clear delusions of grandeur.
Heels should be exactly like this, thinking what they are doing is right, instead of what we have seen so often, where heels just want to be bad just to spite the faces.
Look at Owens for example, one of the top heels in WWE in recent years. Owens always had a method behind his madness, wanting to gain the upper hand to win titles, to make more money as a Prizefighter.
And just like Owens, Ambrose deeps down believes what he is doing is right, living up to the Lunatic moniker he has continued to serve.
The war with Seth Rollins may be far from over, but Ambrose has shown himself to be a true heel, one the WWE Universe can enjoy booing for years to come.
