Why Kevin Owens vs Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship at Royal Rumble is best for business
Dean Ambrose is set to defend his newly won Intercontinental Championship against Seth Rollins on the next episode of Monday Night RAW as the Kingslayer has reportedly cashed in his rematch clause.
With the match taking place on a random RAW episode, expect the Lunatic Fringe to retain his championship as Seth Rollins has already announced his entry in the Royal Rumble match. So, it makes little sense to have the Intercontinental Champion participate in a match which will give the winner a future shot at the Universal title.
This announcement has in a way made it clear that Rollins will lose the title match on RAW and will focus on the Royal Rumble match of 2019. So, this would leave Dean Ambrose without an opponent to defend his title at Royal Rumble 2019. The WWE Creative should not insert Dean in the Royal Rumble match as the Intercontinental Championship needs to be defended on the pay-per-view.
Now given that Dean defends his title on the show, there are no worthy opponents on RAW who could challenge Dean and so, the WWE could have Dean Ambrose defend the title against a mystery opponent at Royal Rumble and then reveal Kevin Owens (whose return's vignettes are airing on RAW) as the surprise challenger for the championship.
Inserting Kevin Owens in the Intercontinental Championship match at the Royal Rumble show will definitely excite the fans more than having the former Universal Champion return during the Royal Rumble match.
Kevin Owens is one of the most talented wrestlers in the entire locker room and the two superstars have shared the ring a number of times in the past. So, not only will this give Kevin Owens a big stage to make his grand return to WWE but also will give the Royal Rumble match card a fantastic addition just like the 2016 edition of the show.
Either they can make they can establish Kevin Owens as the biggest face superstar on RAW or they can solidify Dean Ambrose as the most vicious heel on Monday Night RAW. Either way, it will be a win-win situation for the WWE if they book the "Dean Ambrose vs Kevin Owens" match at Royal Rumble 2019.
