Opinion: Rey Mysterio should have won the United States Championship when he returned last year

After his amazing match with Andrade last night on Smackdown, not only did Rey Mysterio show that he can still go in the ring, but it made me think about his return to WWE last October and how he should have defeated Shinsuke Nakamura for the United States Championship.

Nakamura won the title from Jeff Hardy last July at Extreme Rules, but was already growing stale at that point and was barely on television or defending the belt. He lost to the returning Mysterio on Smackdown 1000 in October and at that point, he should have begun a feud with Mysterio.

Instead, he was defending the title in throwaway matches against R Truth and Rusev, who would later win the championship in December. Meanwhile, Mysterio was having a lacklustre feud with Randy Orton.

Now, imagine if Mysterio began a feud with Nakamura after defeating him at Smackdown 1000. It would mean that Nakamura and the US title would be on television more, which would make fans care about the title more instead of forgetting it even exists.

Fans love Mysterio as well, which means fans will care about the feud and want to see him win. Nakamura's matches with R-Truth and Rusev, no matter how much he is over, didn't make fans care about the title at all, but Mysterio is on another level compared to them and would bring intrigue.

The biggest thing that Mysterio winning the US title would have done is elevate Andrade. After his feud with Nakamura, Mysterio could have had a filler feud to push his current program with Andrade back to WrestleMania time.

Imagine Mysterio and Andrade having the match they did last night on Smackdown, but instead, it's the opening match at WrestleMania and for the championship. Andrade's win would have been massive and you would have made a star in the process.
